Clechel’s not Cliché
by: Raven Lacuin
Astonishing Taekwondo student-athlete, 2nd Dan Black Belter, and 3rd-time Provincial meet gold medalist, Clechel Maeh Esteban Vibar, clinched another gold medal thriving her way through her 3rd Central Luzon Regional Athletic Association (CLRAA).
It all started halfway through 2017 when she, then a Grade 5 student, was encouraged by her cousin to pursue her awe-inspiring Taekwondo journey which eventually became her passion alongside her siblings. In the same year, the doubt for herself vanished as despite being a rookie, Clechel got all the way to CLRAA after being a gold medalist in her first-ever Provincial meet.
In addition to this, pursuing a combat sport like Taekwondo gives knowledge in self-defense. She took advantage of this useful skill while sipping the fulfillment of joy in practicing.
On this day, Clechel is one of the distinguished Taekwondo athletes of Tarlac Agricultural University – Laboratory School (TAU – LS). She was born on the last day of May 2007 (15 years old) and is currently a Grade 10-A student living in San Francisco, Santa Ignacia, Tarlac. Not so far from where she lives, Clechel spent her Elementary days at San Francisco Elementary School.
Moreover, in spite of being a student-athlete, Clechel continues to prioritize her studies as, according to her, being a student weighs more than being an athlete. In fact, she is a consistent honor student who knows her priorities in life. She trains whenever she is free, especially on weekends when there are no classes.
Throughout her 2023 Tarlac Provincial meet journey which happened in Tarlac National High School, she participated in 3 categories; (1) Singles B, where she earned her latest gold, (2) Pair category poomsae with a silver medal, and (3) Team category poomsae, winning a bronze medal.
Furthermore, Clechel also joined some outside-school competitions where she spectacularly did a great job. In particular, she won a silver medal in sparring and a bronze in poomsae at the 7th Daedo Taekwondo Open Championship and another gold medal in poomsae at the Ong Taekwondo Academy Open Championship.
From all of her achievements, she was pushed through to her limits in achieving her hard-earned 1st and 2nd dan black belts which make it more memorable and rewarding. Albeit, no matter how hard it is, she will continue to pursue Taekwondo for her family, especially for her sister.
A motivation for aspiring athletes, “Pag nahihirapan ka sa training, isipin mo na lahat ng naaral at natututunan mo diyan ay magagamit mo at makakatulong sa’yo [sa] competition. Hard work beats talent. Talent is useless without hard work.”
For her next goals, Clechel hopes that she would receive a student-athlete award at this year’s Moving-up ceremony and aims to clutch another medal in CLRAA.
Although there is no definite date and venue, Clechel is expected to participate in the upcoming CLRAA 2023.
